Amid the clamor of the post-truth era, where emotional appeal often outweighs factual accuracy religion increasingly takes on the form of instant visual commodities. The kiai, once the central axis of knowledge and moral guidance, now finds himself competing with smartphone screens that promise spiritual satisfaction in sixty seconds or less.
The Collapse of the Pesantren Walls
Historically, religious authority in the archipelago was hierarchical, grounded in a carefully preserved sanad, a lineage of knowledge passed down through generations. In The Crescent in the East: Islam in Asia (1986), Michael C. Williams portrays the kiai not merely as a ritual leader, but as a social anchor, mediating between the worldly and the spiritual. A student (santri) was expected to be physically present, to breathe in the dust of the pesantren, and to absorb the teacher’s character through a process of close, continuous companionship—mulazamah.
Yet as sociologist Bryan S. Turner notes in Religious Authority and the New Media (2007), digital technology has dismantled the monopoly of authority. The towering walls of pesantren have not fallen to physical force, but to the invisible web of the internet. Today, anyone with rhetorical flair and visual polish can be perceived as an “ustaz.” Authority has fragmented; religious reference points are no longer singular.
On the ground, the shift is unmistakable. Gen Z is far more likely to search for rulings on prayer through Google or short video clips than to open classical texts like Fathul Qarib. The smartphone offers privacy and speed, luxuries not always available in traditional study circles bound by time and place.
